Flaxen is a modifier that affects the mane and tail, causing it to become a white to cream colour. Flaxen is not totally understood at this time, but the theory is that Flaxen is recessive and only affects red pigment (both parents must pass it on, but only red will display it). Which means this gene could be passed along for generations on red or black based horses before showing itself physically in a red based horse that receives TWO copies. Therefore to look like a flaxen, a horse must receive two chestnut genes AND two flaxen genes. Flaxen doesn't always effect the mane and tail equally. It is possible for either the mane or tail to be lightened while the other is not. The amount of flaxen can also change with the horses age. Many people believe the flaxen mane and tail in
chestnut is caused by the Silver gene... however these are NOT the same gene..
silver effects black, flaxen only effects red... not convinced ? Read on -
