Often foals are born with "camouflage shading" that can confuse the breeder as to the foals real colour... many are mistaken for duns or dilutes because of this shading. However as the foal matures the counter shading is lost.

Black Mare:

Chillie Wynds Mystiques Lady

Sire: Bay appaloosa
Dam: Silver Bay

Bred by
Chillie Wynds Miniature Equine Stud

Owned by Loadstar stud

This girl was so light when born she was registered as a silver, however as she matured she shed out black - with no sign of silver traits anywhere.  Her white tail helped the silver belief, but it was shed out by approximately 1.5 years of age.
Pictured as a new born, then clipped at 6 months and unclipped in Winter coat at 2 years.
