How come - if all horses are red or black based, my horse doesn't LOOK chestnut or Black???
Well... Some genes modify the base colour of horses (as opposed to diluting the colour).

They may modify the body colour, the mane and tail or all 3.  Modifiers such as Grey change the colour so much that you may not even know what the horse's base colour is by looking at it.
