Smokey Black is caused by a single dose of the Cream gene on a Black base. 
Because the Cream gene is an incomplete dominant it does not affect black pigment unless it is present in homozygous form - in other words - a double dilute.

Smoky Black horses look like regular Black horses although some may be faded so much they appear Brown.

If you have a black horse that gives you cream offspring from non-cream partners, then you actually have a Smokey black.
